Diesel generator fuel consumption formula (L/hr and L/kWh)

1) Formula: convert power load to fuel use per hour (L/hr)

Fuel consumption (L/hr) = Electrical output (kW) × Specific fuel consumption (L/kWh)

Where:
  • kW = real power your generator is delivering (important: not kVA)
  • L/kWh = liters of diesel needed to produce 1 kWh
    • Typical diesel genset at mid-load might be around 0.24–0.30 L/kWh (varies by model and load)

2) Convert kVA to kW (if you only know kVA)

kW = kVA × Power Factor (PF)

Where:

•PF is often 0.8 for many industrial loads (but your real PF could be 0.7–1.0)

3) One worked example (100 kVA at 75% load)

  • Assume:

    • Generator size = 100 kVA

    • Load level = 75%

    • Power factor (PF) = 0.8

    • SFC = 0.27 L/kWh (example value)

    • Step 1) Convert 75% load to kVA output

      • kVA output = 100 × 0.75 = 75 kVA

    • Step 2) Convert kVA to kW

What Affects Fuel Consumption?

Diesel consumption is not fixed. It depends on several key factors:
  • Load level – 50%, 75%, or 100% of generator capacity.
  • Generator size & efficiency – newer models may save fuel.

What Load Uses the Least Fuel? (The 50–80% Efficiency Sweet Spot)
